Harnaaz Sandhu won the 2021 Miss Universe beauty pageant and before that, she won Miss Diva Universe 2021 and is the third Indian who has won the esteemed pageant. She is the 70th Miss and brought the title back home after 21 years. Before her, Lara Dutta has crowned the title in 2000 and the first one to win the title was Sushmita Sen back in 1994.
Harnaaz Sandhu biography
Harnaaz Sandhu was born in the Gurdaspur district of Punjab to her father Pritampal Singh Sandhu and mother Rabinder Kaur Sandhu. By profession, her father and mother are realtors and gynaecologists respectively. Sandhu was brought up in a typical Jat Sikh Family. She also has a sibling in the form of an older brother named Harnoor.
In 2006 her family moved to England only to return two years later to India and eventually settled down in Chandigarh, where Sandhu spent most of her childhood as well as adulthood. She studied in the Shivalik Public School, Chandigarh and completed her post-graduation from a government girls college, Chandigarh. Before she won the Miss Universe title Sandhu was pursuing her degree in public administration.
Before Sandhu even became the Miss Universe, she was competing in a lot of different beauty pageants. As a teenager, she got her clutches onto the reputed titles such as Miss Chandigarh 2017 and Miss Max Emerging Star India 2018. Her father, when she registered for her first pageant, was totally oblivious. It was after Sandhu won the title, she told her father about the registration, which was then welcomed by her father. In pursuit of her interest in pageantry, Sandhu registered for another contest which was Femina Miss India Punjab 2019 and got selected in the top 12.
The road towards becoming Miss Universe
The reason behind Sandhu getting selected for Miss Universe was that she had already won the Miss Diva 2021, which in some sense is a ticket to Miss Universe, which was held on 13 December in Eilat, Israel. In the competition, a total of 80 contestants participated. Sandhu was amongst the 16 contestants that advanced to the later stages, namely top 10, top 5 and top 3 and then winning the competition.
Sandhu was crowned by Andrea Meza, the Mexican winner of Miss Universe 2020. The two other contestants that she was competing against hailed from Paraguay and South Africa.
After winning the title, it is a general rule for the winners to reside in New York and then tour different parts of the world for different events pertaining to various social issues, one of which is menstrual equality. Sandhu, so far in her tenure as the Miss Universe has travelled to Israel, USA and India.
